How to Get Dog Poop Out of Carpet (Fresh, Dried, or Diarrhea)

Accidents happen. A puppy, a sick stomach, a door that didn’t get opened in time, and now there’s a mess ground into the carpet. The good news: dog poop comes out of carpet cleanly if you go in the right order. The bad news: most people make it worse in the first thirty seconds by scrubbing. We clean up dog waste for a living, so here’s how to do it without spreading the stain or baking in the smell.

Three Rules Before You Start

1. Don’t scrub. Blot. Scrubbing grinds the mess deeper into the fibers and spreads it wider. Every step below is lift, blot, and press, never scrub.
2. Skip the hot water. Poop is a protein stain, and heat cooks protein into the fibers and locks the stain and the smell in for good. Cool or lukewarm water only.
3. Work from the outside in. Clean from the edge of the stain toward the center so you’re shrinking it, not smearing it into clean carpet.

Fresh, Solid Poop

The easiest case, if you catch it fast.

1. Pick up the solid waste with a plastic bag, or slide a paper plate underneath and lift straight up. Don’t press down.
2. Grab any residue with dry paper towels, blotting, not wiping.
3. Mix a solution: one tablespoon of dish soap in two cups of cool water (or use an enzyme cleaner, more on that below).
4. Dab it onto the spot with a cloth and let it sit a minute.
5. Blot with a clean, dry cloth. Repeat until nothing transfers.
6. Rinse by blotting with plain cool water, press dry with towels, and let it air dry.

Dried or Crusted Poop

If you found it late, don’t scrape it off dry. You’ll shred it into powder and push it deeper.

1. Lay a damp (not soaked) cloth over it for five to ten minutes to soften it.
2. Gently lift the softened material with a spoon or a dull scraper, edge to center.
3. Then follow the fresh-poop steps above.

Runny or Diarrhea

The messiest, and the one where technique matters most.

1. Blot up the liquid first with a thick stack of paper towels. Press, lift, repeat with fresh towels. Do not wipe.
2. Remove any solids with a spoon, working edge to center.
3. Liquid soaks into the padding, so this is where an enzyme cleaner earns its keep. Apply it generously, enough to reach as deep as the mess went, and let it dwell for the time on the label.
4. Blot dry, then air dry. Resist the urge to rinse heavily, which just spreads it.

The Smell Is a Separate Problem

You can lift the stain and still have a lingering odor days later, because the smell comes from bacteria and residue down in the fibers and padding, and ordinary carpet cleaner only masks it.

The fix is an enzyme cleaner (sold as “pet enzyme” or “bio” cleaner). Enzymes break down the waste proteins and bacteria that cause the smell instead of covering them. It’s the one product worth buying for this. Apply it after the stain is lifted, give it time to work, and let the spot dry fully.

What Not to Do

• No bleach or ammonia-based cleaners. Ammonia smells like urine to a dog and can invite a repeat performance in the same spot. Bleach can wreck the carpet color.
• No steam cleaner or hot water on a fresh stain. Heat sets protein stains permanently.
• No hard scrubbing. It frays the carpet and spreads the mess.

When It’s Beyond DIY

If the mess soaked into the padding, sat for days, or covers a large area, a home cleaning may only get you partway. That’s when a professional carpet cleaner with a real extractor is worth it, before the smell settles in for good.

The Real Fix Is Outside
